Chat Lines also referred to as partylines or chat rooms, originally began as conference bridges where telephone callers would be placed in a telephone conference with other callers who would then talk in real time with each other.  However, this model had it’s issues, as often a single caller could interrupt the experience for everyone in the chat room.  As technology advanced, it became possible to allow users to simply record their own personal introduction would would then be played to other users online.  When a caller heard an interesting introduction, they were given the option to send a private message to that user.  The recipient of the message could then either reply to message or initiate a live conversation.  This new method of facilitating a chat call became know as “virtual chat” as it allows a caller to carry on multiple private virtual conversation and to screen out users they do not wish to speak with.
